Personal Coaching

Masonry is one of the best entry points into special inspection — no prior construction experience required. This course was built to give you both the knowledge and the test-readiness you need.

I've coached hundreds of students through the masonry exam, and I know where the tricky areas are. Our targeted practice questions and plan-reading exercises will get you there.

I'm your personal coach throughout the process. Check out these real coaching conversations to see how I support my students.

Real Coaching Conversations

Here's what 1-to-1 coaching looks like with our students

Masonry wall along gridline
I see where the typical MW-1 wall is used on the schedule, but not where MW-2 is used on D5/S002. although they are the same horizontal reinforcement..is this a mistake?
The question is: "For the masonry wall along gridline J.4 from gridlines 2 to 4, what horizontal reinforcement goes in the top and bottom courses of the wall, respectively?"
Answer 1: 2 #4 bars and 2 #5 bars Answer 2: 2 #5 bars and 2 #4 bars Answer 3: 2 #4 bars and 2 #4 bars Answer 4: 2 #5 bars and 2 #5 bars
The correct answer is: Answer 2.
My answer was: Answer 3.
Matt Owens
Hi, Chris. Sheet S-111A shows us that this is an MW-2 wall. The very top table of D5/S-002 lists the wall types and their reinforcement. MW-2 has (2) #4 horizontal bars at 32" o.c., so that's what we use in the bottom course.
Slumped blocks
I am doing the Masonry Module and wanted to report something that seems to be a typo (I've **Capitalized** it) and ask for clarification.
The text of Illustration 2C in module 2 says: "Some blocks are made with a slumping style and are called slumped blocks. The nominal dimensions for a slumped block are usually ½-inch **LARGER** than the actual block dimensions, versus the ⅜-inch in typical CMU blocks."
However Question 5 on the module 2 quiz states: "Slumped block unit dimensions are typically ____ **LESS** than the nominal dimensions." With the correct answer being 1/2"
My assumption is that the slumped blocks are typically 1/2" less than nominal dimensions compared with normal that are 3/8", however being fairly unfamiliar with CMU block types its possible they really are larger than nominal? Could you clarify this, thanks!
Matt Owens
These are still consistent with each other. Illustration 2C tells us that the nominal dimensions (like 8 inches) are larger than the actual dimensions by 1/2".
Then question 5 tells us the same thing, just in reverse. The actual dimensions are 1/2" smaller than the nominal dimensions.
So for example, an 8 inch block is our nominal dimension, but our actual slumped block dimension would mean that it actually measures 7.5 inches wide.

Just passed my masonry plan test.

Hi Gabe, just passed my masonry plan test so I'm all set for my ICC masonry inspection.

The training really covers ICC inspection not just to pass the test but also covers materials to be a good inspector, so I believe more and more industry professionals will acknowledge SI Certs to be some sort of benchmarking for hiring a good and qualified ICC inspector on top of getting the ICC certification.

I owe a thanks to these trainings.

Hey I just want to let you know that I passed the ICC structural masonry exam and I owe a thanks to these trainings.

I actually found your study exams more difficult than the ICC exam, which made it significantly easier.

Passed the Codes!

On April 30 2024, I passed the 84C Structural Masonry Codes test. It took me a lot of effort and dedication to study to get here. Definitely, SI Certs course helps a lot. It has a lot of information to memorize, it is also very easy to follow and practical. The Code Practice Test is phenomenal. It's like the real test. It helps to practice what you already read and studied on each module. If any person wants to become a Special Inspector, this is the place to begin: SI Certs.

Passed on the first attempt

Your courses have been very helpful and worthwhile. I've used them to prepare for the ICC concrete, masonry, and soils tests, all of which I've passed on the first attempt.

Career Tip

Structural masonry is widely used on projects and requires no prior construction experience or other certifications to become Masonry Special Inspection certified. Masonry is often a "break-in" certification, where one can use to break into the inspection field.
