What is the ICC Structural Welding Special Inspector exam?

The ICC Structural Welding exam tests your knowledge of AWS D1.1 welding code requirements for structural welded connections, weld inspection techniques, welder qualification, NDE methods, in addition to welding requirements from other code references governing sheet steel and reinforcing steel.

How is this different from the AWS CWI exam?

The ICC Structural Welding exam focuses specifically on special inspection duties under IBC Chapter 17 — verifying weldments to meet code on construction sites. The AWS CWI is a broader credential that qualifies welding inspection across all industries. Additionally, CWIs find that this credential is required over ICC's Structural Welding certification for many high profile commercial jobs and within certain stringent municipalities, such as Clark County in Nevada. Many 3rd party and contracted inspection professionals hold both credentials.

What code books do I need for this exam?

The exam references several, the most costly in terms of code references than all the other special inspection certifications. Required are the AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code (2020), the A2.4 Standard Symbols for Welding, Brazing, Nondestructive Examination (2020), the AWS D1.3 Sheet Steel Code (2018), the AWS D1.4 Reinforcing Steel Code (2018), and the AISC Steel Construction Manual (15th Ed.). The test is open-book. Books are not included with purchase of the course, they must be acquired separately.
